The Doctorate Downside

For someone who is currently at his Doctoral studies (that's me), this comes as a downer.

'PhD graduates do at least earn more than those with a bachelor’s degree. A study in the Journal of Higher Education Policy and Management by Bernard Casey shows that British men with a bachelor’s degree earn 14% more than those who could have gone to university but chose not to. The earnings premium for a PhD is 26%. But the premium for a master’s degree, which can be accomplished in as little as one year, is almost as high, at 23%. In some subjects the premium for a PhD vanishes entirely. PhDs in maths and computing, social sciences and languages earn no more than those with master’s degrees. The premium for a PhD is actually smaller than for a master’s degree in engineering and technology, architecture and education. Only in medicine, other sciences, and business and financial studies is it high enough to be worthwhile. Over all subjects, a PhD commands only a 3% premium over a master’s degree.'

Though this news isn't at all pleasing, I am quite enjoying my study. The prospect of research too is exciting.

Wish me luck. :)

Appearences can be deceptive at times.... It's just a random survey, who knows it better than you... the pros n cons?? well you have taught us..
i made a note of the statement you spoke out of the blues "Biases cloud our Judgement-Prof. Ray Titus"
Here would like to reitrate it, with your permission of course.. There are things which humans do because they want to.. It's a behaviour which seperates them from the mass.. With the limited interactions i had with you, i realised you enjoy it all so much... understanding psychies behind the actions, the logics behind the answers, sighting diff. perspectives at every situation...
PhD, at the end of the day is just a degree.. What & why you are doing it has a purpose whose scope goes beyond what's needed..And with such a passion involved, even god couln't resist the endeavours for long.
Though i was a mrktng minor and a fin. major, but the knowledge i got by just observing you in action and doing every thign you said, has given me enough confidence that i am actually doing my first free lance consultancy for a Music school in Bangalore to brand their event which has presence of all leading musicians (specially band artists) of bangalore... :)
at present doing it for free.. :)
will seek guidance once i am through with my report..

Nikhil,

Thanks, Appreciate it. Haven't yet zeroed in on a particular area for research...tho' have a few in mind.

Nishant,

Thank you...am delighted you are doing brand consulting work for a client. Surely the money will come in its time. Will be happy to take a look and contribute in any way.

Pushpendra,

Not exactly...Research is fun, never mind the money. :)
