Why Sunetra's loss of independence has nothing to do with Uber

Sunetra Choudhury is mourning the loss of her independence in the aftermath of the Uber rape. I see it differently. It isn't her independence she's lost, its liberal naivete.

Liberals are why we have lawless states. Soft on crime, they stand up and scream hoarse that laws be watered down to protect the deviants. Sure, Uber messed up with the background check and GPS tracking, but if you think setting right either of the two or both is going to arrest crime in taxis, or cars, or anywhere else, you are living in la la land!

Put in whatever you want in taxis, there'll still be the odd deviant roaming the streets to perpetrate evil. To prevent crimes in taxis and elsewhere liberals must get off their naive moral horses and believe evil exists. They must know it lurks around every corner, and if you've made it without an incident around the corner ascribe that either to your heightened instincts (Read Gavin de Becker's 'Gift of Fear' to know more) or to pure luck. Once you've accepted the existence of evil, behave in a manner that's reflective of that knowledge. For example, don't stay out late as much as you can. Of course if you are in the profession Sunetra is, take adequate steps to stay safe. Keep others informed, stay in groups, be on your guard, carry stuff that can be used in your defence, and so on on. Also, if you have had a few drinks and feel woozy, DON'T travel alone, and with strangers!

Which brings me to my second point. The right to self protection and the need for tough laws and its speedy application. Liberals believe government is the guardian angel who will protect them. Of course, government is supposed to do that, which is why we pay taxes; but the reality out there on the mean streets is starkly different. Government can't protect us all, and even won't. A socialist crony-capitalist government is as incompetent as it gets in governance. Plus a larger bureaucracy and greater regulation, things only get worse! How do I know? Hey, haven't I encountered socialist bureaucracy long enough to know?

So what's the answer? The 'right to bear arms', laws like 'stand your ground', and trained and strong policing. Add to that laws that strike fear when applied (including the death penalty) in those that are contemplating evil and you have a potent combination. Tell you what, if the laws in place were harsh and applied well, and the police had done their job, the animal who committed this heinous crime would have been rotting in a cell. Instead he was out on the streets, in a taxi, continuing on his evil ways.

What a shame.

Despite my scepticism, I hope at some point we realize regulation and greater bureaucratic intervention is not the answer to crime. I fervently wish people see its a strong dependence on an aptly trained and armed populace that keep us safe. Plus a state that means business and that has on the books laws that award the death penalty so decent citizens can go about their affairs with enhanced confidence, and we have a better chance at a lawful society

In my view ,Either the Penalties have to be real strict on paper which cannot be mended or bended at any cost or the Moral values must change , which is highly unlikely , unless these two happen we may never have a safe society .
